Transformer Testing Requirements Matrix
This article explains why and when transformers must be tested and provides a visual matrix showing which tests apply to each situation. It helps maintenance / testing teams to understand the relationship between transformer condition, operational events, and the diagnostic tests needed to verify health and safety.
Transformers Testing Purpose
- Before the transformer leaves the factory (FAT – Factory Acceptance Tests) To detect manufacturing defects and Confirm Transformer meets the client specification.
- After delivery but before energization (SAT – Site Acceptance Tests) To ensure no damage occurred during transport or installation.
- After Major Maintenance or Repair To confirm the transformer is safe to return to service.
- Periodic Routine Testing During Service (Condition Monitoring) To Detect aging, moisture, insulation deterioration, and early faults.
- After Abnormal Events To ensure the transformer is still healthy after stress.
- Before Energizing After Long Storage To ensure No moisture ingress and insulation degradation occurred during storage.
